The Institute has as its main objectives:
- The promotion and development of the science of and practice of Public Administration
- To provide a professional organization for public administrators with the necessary professionalism, dedication and self esteem.
- To promote the exchange of ideas and information, formulation exacting standard of competence and conduct as well as exercise discipline to uphold the highest ethical standards among members.
The IPAN tries to achieve these objectives by:
- Specifying educational and training requirements
- Conducting research and publishing the results
- Generally seeking to promote administrative skills for the benefit of the public sector and the Nigerian economy
